From August 11-13, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is visiting the Czech Republic. During his visit, he met with Cardinal Dominik Duka, Archbishop of Prague and a hero of religious freedom, at Prague’s magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral.

Cardinal Duka has an inspiring life story. Under the authoritarian government which led the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (as it was known from 1948 to 1990), after setting up a clandestine religious studies center and organizing activities for young Dominicans, in 1981 he was sentenced to 15 months in prison, accused of “religious activities” (see his bio here: https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/documentation/cardinali_biografie/cardinali_bio_duka_d.html)

We should all be truly inspired by his story of courage despite being imprisoned and persecuted for his Catholic faith under the former authoritarian regime.
