Today is International Snow Leopard Day! Did you know that to survive in the cold mountain climates of Asia, the fur on the stomachs of snow leopards can be up to five inches thick? With only about 4,000 individuals still alive in the wild today, snow leopards are endangered animals. Habitat loss, encroachment, and poaching are the greatest threats to snow leopard survival.
The United States helps protect wild snow leopards through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an agreement among 183 parties (including China) to ensure that international trade in animal and plant specimen does not threaten their survival in the wild.
Countries should close loopholes to ensure species protected by CITES are not used in any commercial products. CITES aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. For more info on CITES, click here: https://www.cites.org/
