Beijing Named City with the Most Billionaires

Beijing now has more billionaires than any other city in the world, according to the 2021 Forbes World's Billionaires List.

China's capital city got 33 new billionaires in the last year, bringing the number to 100. That's one more billionaire than the city in second place, New York.

Before this year, New York had been the city with the most billionaires for seven years in a row. But in the last year, it has only gotten seven new billionaires.

New York's billionaires have a combined wealth of $550 billion, however, which is still higher than Beijing's $490 billion.

The richest person living in Beijing is Zhang Yiming, the founder of TikTok, who had a net worth of $35.6 billion when the Forbes list was made using data from March 5, 2021. In New York, the richest resident is former mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is worth $59 billion.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos — who lives in Washington state — is at the top of the Billionaires List for the fourth year, with a net worth of $177 billion.

When it comes to countries, the US has more billionaires than any other nation, with 724. China is in second place with 626, and India has the third most billionaires with 140.

The number of billionaires in the world increased by 660 to 2,755 in the last year. Of those 660, 250 are back on the Forbes World's Billionaires list after falling off it in previous years.

But this year's list has seen a record high of completely new billionaires, with 493 — or about one new billionaire every 17 hours in the year.
