#US-General Election# - Who can vote in the General Election & “Get Out the Vote” Registration Drives.
When George Washington was elected as the first president in 1789, only 6 percent of the U.S. population could vote. In most of the original 13 states, only landowning men over the age of 21 had the right to vote. Today, the U.S. Constitution guarantees that all U.S. citizens over the age of 18 can vote in federal (national), state and local elections.
American citizens ages 18 and older can register to vote. Voting in the United States is a two-step process. There is no national list of eligible voters, so a citizen must first qualify by becoming registered. To register, voters must meet the residency requirements of their states and comply with voter-registration deadlines. Often the voter registration process inspires “get out the vote” efforts for different voter groups, such as MTV’s “Rock the Vote” for young voters or the American Association for Retired People (AARP) organizing voter registration for senior citizens. "Motor voter" programs offer eligible voters the convenience of registering to vote at the same time as they apply for a driver's license.
During the 2016 elections, Google used its popular search engine to make it easier for Americans to vote.
The company provided a summary box detailing state voting laws at the top of the search results whenever a user appears to be looking for that information. The information focused on the rules particular to the state where the search request originates unless a user asks for another location.
Google also released its registration and voting guides to U.S. nonprofit groups and other organizations aiming to get more people to the polls.
Unlike some other countries, however, the United States does not have a law requiring citizens to vote. Can you name any country that does?
