1863年11月19日，亚伯拉罕·林肯（Abraham Lincoln）总统在宾夕法尼亚州葛底斯堡（1863年7月南北战争的一场战斗地点）发表了著名的“葛底斯堡”演讲。

林肯总统在演说时，心中想到的并非战争本身的意义，而更多的是对国家未来走向的考虑，他特别希望南北双方能够宽容和解，并为重建一个人人平等、自由的国家而重新团结一致。

在演讲中，林肯总统讲到政府与人民的关系时，有一句名言广为流传，曾被孙中山翻译为“民有、民治、民享”(of the people, by the people, for the people)，成为三民主义的蓝本。

#OnThisDay in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln gave his famous “Gettysburg” speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of a Civil War battle in July 1863.

During his speech, President Lincoln’s thoughts were not about the meaning of the war itself, but more about the future direction of the country. He particularly hoped that the North and the South would be able to tolerate reconciliation and reunite for the reconstruction of a country where everyone is equal and free.

In his speech, President Lincoln’s concepts on the relationship between the government and the people was widely circulated and was translated by Sun Yat-sen as “ of the people , by the people, for the people”, to become the blueprint of the Three People's Principles.
