Hello, everybody. This is Elliot from ETJ English. I am your British pronunciation teacher on YouTube.

大家好。我是 ETJ 英语的埃利奥特。我是你在油管上的英语发音老师。

Today, we have quite an interesting topic to talk about. We're talking about something called "assimilation". Assimilation.

今天,我们要谈论一个非常有趣的话题。那就是“同化”,同化。

Now, some of you might know what this is already, but it's quite cool to understand this because it does help you with sounding more like a native and much more natural when you speak. We're gonna talk about it in a second.

你们中的一些人可能已经知道这是什么了,但如果你理解它,那就太棒了,因为它可以让你你听起来更像一个本地人,当你讲英语的时候会更自然。我们马上就会讲到。

Just before that, I quickly need to tell you that this week, I have released the British pronunciation programme. It's an online course which you can buy on my website ETJEnglish. com. Really easy to remember, right?

在此之前,我想尽快告诉你,这周我已经发布了英式发音课程。这是一门在线课程,你可以在我的网站 ETJEnglish.com 上购买。很容易记,对吧?

Go and check it out and if you're interested, I'd love to welcome you on the course. Anyway, assimilation.

去看看吧,如果你们感兴趣的话,欢迎你们来上这门课。总之,回到“同化”。

Assimilation happens when we have two words, two words. Now my first example for you is when somebody sneezes. Right?

当我们有两个单词,两个单词的时候,就会产生同化。我给你们举的第一个例子是当有人打喷嚏时。

I absolutely love sneezing. It's like the best feeling ever.

我特别喜欢打喷嚏。这是最棒的感觉。

Now, when somebody sneezes in England, there's something very common that we say to them after it happens. We will usually say "bless you".

在英国,当有人打喷嚏时,我们通常会在他打喷嚏后对他说一些话。我们通常会说“bless you(祝福你)”。

So, we don't say /bles ju/. We say /bleʃu/.

我们不说/bles ju/。我们说/bleʃu/。

We create the /ʃ/ sound. So, what's actually happening is we are modifying the sound at the end of the first word to make it sound easier and more similar to the next word to join them together.

我们发/ʃ/音。所以实际上我们是在修改第一个单词末尾的发音,使它听起来更容易,更接近下一个单词,把它们连在一起。

It's a type of connected speech. Now, assimilation happens in loads and loads of different ways.

这是连读的一种。同化的方式有很多种。

It's quite complicated. I'm just going to teach you one, two, three, four different ways of using assimilation, four different situations where it happens.

非常复杂。我只会教你一、二、三、四种不同的同化方法,发生同化的四种情况。

So first, let's start with the one we've already done. When a word finishes with a /s/ sound and the next word begins with a /j/ or a /ʃ/, then what happens is that /s/ is going to change to a /ʃ/.

首先我们从我们刚说过的开始。当一个单词以一个/s/音结尾,下一个单词以一个/j/ 音或/ʃ/音开头的时候,那么,/s/音要变成/ʃ/音。

So instead of being /bles ju/. It was /bleʃu/.

所以不是 /bles ju/。是/bleʃu/。

Bless you/bleʃu/. Some other examples: I'm going to wear my dress shoes tonight.

还有一些例子,I'm going to wear my dress shoes tonight.(我今晚要穿礼服鞋。)I'm going to wear my dress shoes tonight.

I'm going to wear my dress shoes tonight. If you don't know what dress shoes are, they are the very smart black shiny shoes that men wear when they wear a suit or a tuxedo and they want to look very very fancy.

如果你不知道礼服鞋是什么,它们是非常时髦的黑色闪亮的鞋子,男人们穿西装或燕尾服时穿的,这会让他们看起来非常非常时髦。他们会穿正装鞋。

They'll wear their dress shoes. Try it with me, "dress shoes".

试着跟我读,dress shoes。所以我们把/s/ 音去掉,用/ʃ/音取而代之,并把这两个单词合在一起。

So we're removing that /s/ and replacing it with a /ʃ/ to join those two words together. We're very lazy as English speakers.

我们说英语的人很懒。再来一个:What makes you angry? What makes you angry?(什么让你生气?)

One more:What makes you angry? What makes you angry? Moving on from the assimilation and creating the /ʃ/ sound, going to talk about another situation.

说完了产生/ʃ/音的情况,我们继续谈谈另一种同化。当我第一次见到某人,当我和他们握手时,我通常说“Nice to meet you(很高兴认识你)”,“Nice to meet you”。

When I first meet somebody, first thing I usually say, when I shake their hand is I say "Nice to meet you", "Nice to meet you". What sound am I creating now?

我现在发了什么音?是/tʃ/音。

It's a /tʃ/ sound. Nice to meet /tʃ/ you.

就像火车,对吧?Choo。

Like a train, right? Choo. So, this is another situation.

这是另一种情况。这是一个/t/音结尾的词加上一个单词以/j/音开头的词。

So, it's when a word finishes with a /t/ sound and the next word begins with a /j/. What we do, we push them together by creating a /tʃ/ sound.

我们做的就是把它们合在一起变成/tʃ/音。更多例子。

Nice to meet /tʃ/ you. Some other examples.

Can't you come to the party?(你不能来参加晚会吗?)Can't (tʃ) you come to the party?

Can't you come to the party? Can't (tʃ) you come to the party?

反义疑问,很好的例子。You're from England, aren't you?(你是英国人,对吗?)

Question tags, perfect example for this one. You're from England, aren't you?

You're from England, aren't (tʃ) you?再来一个例子,如果我真的喜欢某人的t恤,与其说“我喜欢你的 T 恤”,这里的人经常说“上衣”。

You're from England, aren't (tʃ) you? And one more, if I really like someone's T-shirt, instead of saying "I like your T-shirt", it's quite common here to actually say "top", ok?

所以我可以问某人:Where did you get your top?(你的上衣是从哪里买的?)Where did you get (tʃ) your top?

So I could ask someone: Where did you get your top? Where did you get (tʃ) your top?

实际发生了两次,这里的“did you”,在/d/音和/j/音之间产生了一个/dʒ/音。“Where did (dʒ) you get (tʃ) your”,产生/tʃ/音,“get (tʃ) your top”。

There's actually happening twice here, we've got "did you" which is where we're creating a /dʒ/ sound between a /d/ and a /j/. "Where did (dʒ) you get (tʃ) your", creating the /tʃ/ sound, "get (tʃ) your top".

当我说得快的时候听起来更好。Where did (dʒ) you get (tʃ) your top?

When I say it faster, it sounds much better. Where did (dʒ) you get (tʃ) your top?

这里有两处同化。这里的“your”读音也变成了/jə/。

So, we have two pieces of assimilation happening here. And we also have "your" becoming /jə/.

它是一个功能词。这在这种情况下不是很重要。

Where did you get your top? It's a function word.

它不是一个重读词,所以“you”或“your”经常会读成/jə/。这是一种非常地道的口音,尤其是在南方。

It's not very important in this in this situation. It's not one of the stressed words, so "you" or "your" can often become /jə/.

你会经常听到这个发音,所以如果你想让自己听起来更自信、更放松、更正常的话,学习这个发音话非常重要。就像我说的,这只是我们进行同化的几种不同情况。

This is a really really native way of speaking especially in the South. You'll hear it a lot, so it's really important that you learn this if you want to sound a bit more confident more relaxed and more kind of normal with your accent.

记住我教你们的规则。看看你们能不能自己造句子然后自己练习。

So, like I said, these are just a few different situations where we do assimilation. Just, just kind of remember the rules that I've given you.

创造句子是提高发音的一个非常重要的方法,因为你在运用你的想象力,你在创造某些东西,同时你也在练口语。只会让你的英语学习速度突飞猛进。

Have a look and see if you can kind of create your own sentences and practice this yourself. Creating sentences is a really important way to improve pronunciation because you're using your imagination and you're creating things and you're speaking at the same time.

练习一下,试试,看看会发生什么。别忘了去 ETJEnglish.com 看看,全新的和更新的新课程。

It's just gonna skyrocket your speed in English, okay? So, practice that, try it, see what happen.

我希望很快能在课程中见到你们。给我点赞,给我点爱心。

Don't forget to check out ETJEnglish. com, completely new and updated with a new course. And I hope to see some of you in the course soon.

我希望你一周愉快,下周四见。伙计们,再见。

Give me a thumbs up, give me some love. I hope you have a wonderful week, see you next Thursday.

Cheers guys, bye.
