11-Year-Old Walking 300 Kilometers for Climate Change
An 11-year-old boy and his mother have started a difficult 321-kilometer walk across England to help make people more aware of climate change.
The aptly named Jude Walker and his mother, Sarah Courtney, are walking from their home in Yorkshire, in northern England, to Westminster in London, where Jude says he wants to talk to politicians about the need for a carbon tax.
He is hoping that his walk will inspire more people to sign a petition from the group Zero Carbon, which says the UK should have a carbon tax — a tax on companies producing greenhouse gasses.
Jude wants to get 100,000 people to sign the petition, which will mean that the tax will be debated by the UK's government in Westminster. By the end of July, the petition had about 43,000 signatures.
Jude got the idea to walk to London from Extinction Rebellion's book This Is Not a Drill, which encourages young people to do what they can to stop climate change. The book says that British politicians don't pay attention to anything that happens outside of London, so Jude decided to go there himself.
The idea was also inspired by his uncle's friend, who cycled around the world to help make people more aware of climate change.
Jude and his mother started walking on July 26. He said that he plans to walk 16 kilometers each day for 21 days to complete his journey. He also hopes that his walk will inspire other young people to do similar things.
