经常听到学生说，“一般英语单词我都能看懂，但怎么就记不住？”
或者说“许多英语句型看起来很简单，我怎么就不会用？
”譬如look,除了“You look beautiful.”（你看上去很漂亮。）或 “You look younger than your age.”（你看上去比你的年龄还 要年轻。）
顶多再来一句 “You look tired.”（你看上去很累。）
别的用法及句型搭配就 不会了。
尽管学过look like，但一知半解就造出了这样让对方尴尬或气愤的句子：You look like a potato.（你看上去像土豆。）圆圆滚滚的；
甚至还有更离谱的，居然造出 “She looks like a chicken.”（她看上去像鸡。）
下面让我们认认真真研究一下look的意思及用法。
一、做名词的用法
1.表示“看”
1.May I have a look at it? 让我看一看好不好？
2.give sb. a look 对某人看了一眼
3.steal a look 偷看一眼
2.表示“脸色，神态；外貌，外表”
1.A stern look passed over the captain's face. 船长的脸上掠过一丝严肃的神情。
2.I don't like the nasty look in his eyes. 我不喜欢他那色迷迷的眼神。
3.Guangzhou has taken on a new look. 广州已旧貌变新颜。
3.表示“面容；美貌”（用复数looks)
1.Don't judge a man by his looks. 别以貌取人。
2.She has good looks. 她容貌姣好。
3.The call girl has lost her looks. 那应召女郎红颜已逝。
二、做及物动词
1.表示“瞧，打量”
1.He looked him in the face and said, "You're an asshole. 他直视着他的脸说：“你是个混蛋。”
2.She looked her blind-date man up and down. 她上下打量着她初次约会的男人。
3.You look me out of my countenance. 你瞧得我局促不安。
2.表示“留心，注意”
1.Please look what time the plane takes off. 请留意一下飞机什么时候起飞。
2.You must look that no one lags behind. 你务必注意不让一个人掉队。
3.表示“用眼色（脸色）表示出……”
1.The beggar looks her gratitude to us for giving her some money. 那乞丐用眼色来感激我们施钱给他。
2.The captives look daggers at us. 俘虏用敌视的目光看着我们。
4.表示“期待”
1.My fiancee looks to be with me as soon as possible. 我未婚妻期待与我尽快见面。
三、做不及物动词
1.表示“看，瞧”
1.Look,here comes the bus. 瞧，车来了。
2.What are you looking at? 你在看什么？
2.表示“显得，好像”
1.I don't know why she looks so blue recently. 我不知道为什么她最近神情这么沮丧。
2.You look about 35. 你看上去大概有35岁。
3.It looks like rain. 看来要下雨了。
3.表示“注意，留神”
1.Look carefully, you'll discover something. 仔细观察一下，你就会有所发现。
2.If you look deeper, you'll find some difference between the twins. 如果你仔细观察的话，你会发现这双胞胎是有些差别的。
4.表示“朝向，朝着”
1.The luxurious villa looks to the sea. 豪宅朝向大海。
四、动词词组
1. look about 四下环顾，四下寻找；察看，考虑
1.What are you looking about? 你在寻找什么？
2.You must look about carefully before making the final decision. 你在做最后的决定前一定要考虑清楚。
2. look after 照料，照顾，关心；目送，眼睛盯着，寻求
1.On the plane the airhostess will look after you. 在飞机上空姐会为你服务的。
2.Is it necessary to look after her like that? 有必要这样盯着她吗？
3. look at 看，查看；考虑，着眼于
1.A blonde is nice to look at. 金发白肤女孩好看。
2.The scenery is not much to look at. 这风景不怎么好看。
3.I come to look at your video phone. 我是来检修你的可视电话的。
4.Can you look at my suggestion? 你能考虑一下我的建议吗？
4.look back 回顾，停止不前，倒退
1.As years went by, the school master often looked back to(或on/upon)his former pupils.
随着时间的推移，小学校长经常回想起他以前的学生。
2.Don't look back to your ex-girlfriend, she won't come back to you. 别老是回想你的前度女友了，她不会回到你的身边了。
3.Our country has never looked back. 我们的国家一直不断地进步。
5.look down upon(或on) 俯看，向下看；瞧不起，轻视
1.The sanatorium looks down on the West Lake. 这座疗养院俯瞰西湖。
2.Don't look down upon the coolie. Every dog has his day. 别瞧不起苦力，瓦片也有翻身日。
6.look for 寻找；期待
1.You're looking for trouble. 你在自找麻烦。
2.We're looking for the delegation's arrival. 我们在期待着代表团的到来。
7. look forward to 盼望，期待
1.I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon. 盼你早日来信。
2.The newly-wed couple look forward to the coming of their first baby. 那对新婚夫妇盼望着第一个孩子的降生。
8. look into 往……的里面看去，窥视；浏览；察看，调查
1.Some nasty guys like to look into a young girl's bedroom. 一些下流坯子喜欢偷窥女孩卧室。
2.The judge should look into the case at once. 法官应对此案立刻展开调查。
9.look on 观看；面向，朝向；合看；旁观；看待
1.We're looking on the basketball match. 我们在观看篮球比赛。
2.I don't want to buy an apartment looking on to the street. 我不想买临街的公寓。
3.May I look on the newspaper with you? 我可以跟你合看一份报纸吗？
4.She looks on(或upon)me as her closest friend. 她把我当作她最亲密的朋友。
5.When China is invaded, I'm sure no Chinese will look on with folded arms and passively.

10. look oneself 不改常态，看上去跟往常一样
1.The SARS victim is looking quite himself again. 非典患者完全恢复了。
2.I don't look(quite myself today. 我今天有点不舒服。
11. look out 朝外看，往外面看；面朝，留神，提防；照料，照看；找出
1.Our balcony looks out on(或over)a lawn. 我们家的阳台朝向草坪。
2.Don't look out of the window. 头别伸出窗外。
3.Look out! There is danger ahead! 当心！前面危险！
4.Though my parents are over 80,they can still look out for themselves. 虽然我双亲已年过80，仍然能自己照料自己。
5.I lost my keys but my puppy looked them out. 我把钥匙给弄丢了，但我的小狗把它们找了出来。
12.look around(或round) 掉头看，环顾，到处寻找；观光；察看，慎重考虑
1.Don't look round. Go straight ahead! 别回头看，一直朝前走！
2.The short-sighted girl is looking around for her contact lens. 那个近视女孩在寻找她的隐形眼镜。
3.The tourists looked around the old city. 游客参观了旧城区。
4.Decision-makers should always look around carefully before taking any step. 决策者们在采取任何措施前都应深谋远虑。
13.look through 透过……看去，看穿；审核，仔细查看；浏览，温习；从……中显露出来
1.Looking through the window, we can see a beautiful scene. 透过窗户看去，我们可以看见美丽的景色。
2.I looked through his trick at first sight. 我一眼就识破他的花招。
3.The auditor looked through all the vouchers. 查账者审核了全部凭单。
4.Have you looked through your lessons? 你复习功课了吗？
5.Cruelty looks through the kidnapper's eyes. 绑架者眼中露出凶残的目光。
14. look up 向上看；尊敬，仰望；（市场、商业）好转；拜访；查寻，查字典
1.When I look up a tree, I saw a snake. 当我往树上看时，我看见了一条蛇。
2.I look up to you, so you should look up to me, too. 我尊敬你，你也应该尊重我。
3.Things are looking up. 情况正在好转。
