Man Jumps into Lake Michigan Every Day for a Year
A Chicago bus driver looking for a way to reduce his stress during the coronavirus pandemic has jumped into Lake Michigan every day for a full year.
"It was during the pandemic, it was during the protest, it was during an election year," said Dan O'Conor, a father of three. He said that he would go to the lake and block out all the noise and "find some moments of Zen."
While the water in Lake Michigan can get to 25.5 degrees Celsius in the summer, things became more difficult during the winter. The surface of the lake froze over, so O'Conor had to cut a hole in the ice that was big enough to jump through. He said when he got home after one jump, he found about 20 scrapes and cuts on his body.
Even though it was difficult, O'Conor was encouraged by how people reacted to him jumping into the lake each day.
"People started asking me what this was benefiting and how they could support," said O'Conor. He said he started posting videos of himself jumping into the lake on Twitter and Instagram, and received many positive comments. He said that even strangers were commenting on his posts.
On June 12th, O'Conor jumped into the lake for the 365th time, and celebrated doing it every day for a year.
